Sam’s Bulldozer Cake — UPDATE!

by jessikamessika

My friend, Alicia asked for some advice regarding her son’s birthday cake…attempt to make it or just buy one? Obviously my other gifted baking friend, Kendra, and I jumped at the challenge.

Not only do we all love little Sam the man and want him to have the most rocking bulldozer cake ever, but we have also been known to bake our butts off from time to time (e.g. Halloween cupcake decorating til 2am, Guinness pudding for St. Patty’s, not to mention countless showers and parties in the office when we worked together). Also, we made Sam his first ever cupcake and continue to shower him with baked goods, frosting and cookies whenever possible!

Now we just need to figure out how on earth are we going to make this cake! I’m happy I picked up fondant this weekend!

After weeks of waiting — Here’s how the cake turned out:

Bulldozer Cake

We made six cakes (chocolate and vanilla) – 4 rounds and two small rectangles.  After leveling and frosting three together, we started carving in to the largest round.  We basically made a half moon shape and fit it to the stacked 9″ rounds.  Then we started frosting and stacking, then a bit of carving for the “rocky road” to the top.  We had so much cake left over from the leveling and carving that we decided to make a little hill on top – just for fun.

The bulldozer is just three small pieces of cake frosted together and then covered with fondant.  The oreos, frosting and little back vent really brought it to life.  We found the truck candles at the party store (and of course Sam took a bite out of one after being told they were the only pieces he couldn’t eat! haha)

And the best part — Here’s Sam’s reaction:

Bulldozer Cake Reaction

He loved the cake, especially the orange airhead cones and grabbed the bulldozer (you can see him scheming over that fondant covered bulldozer in this picture!) to start.

Everyone at the party enjoyed the cake unveiling and were even more delighted that it tasted SO good!  You just can’t go wrong with a good butter cream frosting!

Happy 3rd Birthday Sam the Man!

Big Thank You to Kendra!  It was so great to bake with you again!
